Hydrogen as an Alternative Energy Source

Latest of this century, fossil fuels became the only one source of energy in the world. Lots of parties fight to take over the primary source producers of energy that cause damage to this world.

Fossil energy use in large scale, especially in the last century, we are faced with various problems. When Fossil was burned to produce energy, fossil fuels release carbon into the air. This causes the release of carbon pollution and damage the ozone layer, which makes the earth we inhabit is getting hot. Continued increase carbon from burning fossil fuels is causing global warming phenomenon.
Although the phenomenon of global warming is disputed the truth by some scientists, but  this phenomenon is causing concern for the citizens of the world. Greater problem from fossil fuels is the depletion of fossil fuel reserves itself that really inevitable.

While fossil fuel reserves depletion, energy needs no rather  down, but increasingly taller everyday. As a result, according to economic principles of supply and offer, then inevitably the price of fossil fuels is also increasingly the ride height.

This situation is certainly very worrying, because if it comes and human beings not yet found another an alternative of energy source, modern civilization will be end along with endless reserves of fossil fuels.

For this reason, lately a lot of human effort to begin to utilize renewable energy sources with more leverage. Renewable energy sources could be solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, bio mass even waves.

Although some sources of energy is shown to be effective in reducing fossil fuel consumption, but almost all renewable energy sources can not compete with fossil fuels. Fossil fuels  properties is mobile, easily stored and transported. Not static as most a renewable energy source.

In addition to a variety of renewable energy sources such as  mentioned above, there is one other energy source with huge potential to replace fossil fuels. Alternative energy sources instead of fossil fuels is hydrogen. Compared to all renewable energy such as mentioned above, hydrogen has several advantages, among others; hydrogen fuel is mobiles like a fossil fuel that we know so far. The difference is, unlike fossil fuels, combustion of hydrogen does not cause carbon pollution.

In the process of combustion, the hydrogen release of heat energy and produce water as waste combustion (2H2 + O2 ---> 2H2O). This hydrogen combustion process produces no carbon. So, when we use hydrogen as a fuel helps reduce the pollution of carbon monoxide (CO) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2), which can reduce the greenhouse effect. Compared to fossil fuels that we use for this common, Gasoline and diesel fuel, hydrogen as a fuel is much more effective in burning.

Another advantage is the amount of hydrogen is very abundant in nature, 93% of all atoms in the universe are Hydrogen, the simplest element of all the elements that exist in nature. Three-quarters of the mass of the universe is hydrogen. Hydrogen in the earth itself is the most common form we know it is water (H2O).

Although many advantages over other fuels, hydrogen also has weakness. The weakness of Hydrogen (H2) as a fuel is its nature as an energy source which can not direct (primary) as well as natural gas, oil or coal. Hydrogen is the energy derivative (secondary) as well as electricity can not be obtained directly from nature, but must be produced using other energy sources such as natural gas, oil, coal, nuclear, solar and other energy sources.

Most hydrogen produced until today is hydrogen derived from natural gas (CH4) through a process called "steam reforming". But more potential to do in the future is to produce hydrogen from water through electrolysis or directly using a photochemical reaction.

Hydrogen is a secondary energy source produced by using other energy sources. In fact hydrogen and electricity are like two different sides of the same coin. Hydrogen can be produced with the use of electricity through a process of electrolysis, conversely, hydrogen can be used  to produce electricity that free pollution via electrolysis process.

Because it is secondary, then the use of hydrogen as a fuel, must be combined with the primary fuel. So the function of hydrogen as a fuel is more a companion that helps the engine to reduce the consumption of primary fuel.

Paired electrolysis technology to produce hydrogen from water by combustion technology using gasoline or diesel fuel to the vehicle or industrial machinery proved quite effective in reducing fossil fuel consumption between 15-50%. So if this technology could be applied, consumption of fossil fuels would be reduced, as well as efficient use of fossil fuels, the use of this technology is also effective in reducing carbon pollution.
